Jim Moseley, Journal Subscriber, 1931-2012

My friend, Jim Moseley, died last week.

Jim published the longest-running UFO publication, Saucer Smear, an irreverent look at the personalities involved in the UFO field. His sense of humor was legendary and you can be certain that anyone who tells you that they didn't like Jim is a pompous ass. The term, "Journal Subscriber," above, is an inside joke that I know the Moseley faithful will appreciate.

I talked with Jim on the phone about once a month for 20 years or so.

We would laugh and talk for hours. I am gonna miss that.

I met Jim in person on a few occasions. In 2001, I interviewed him for my now abandoned documentary on Otis T. Carr. We shot the interview at the site of the famous Silver Bridge collapse in Gallipolis, Ohio. I dug up the footage and threw it together yesterday. I was amazed to find how all-encompassing our conversation was. We covered most of the Moseley canon: Long John Nebel, his cross-country UFO pilgrimage, the contactees, the Straith hoax, Gray Barker, Men in Black, Mothman, Phil Klass, Stanton Friedman, Karl Pflock and, of course, Saucer Smear.

When we started filming, I asked Jim to agree that he wasn't expecting any financial renumeration for the interview. Without batting an eye, he said, "Well, I can always hope…!"

I enjoyed watching Jim tell the old stories and I hope you will, too.

  1. A friend of yours died, my condolences. The interview was very interesting. It reminded me of something i’ve commented on in the past on a number of skeptical blogs. How it behooves a researcher to examine where and when a phenomena (old or new) first was thrust into the public domain and became popular. Reading about the main characters that played a part in the growth of the legend, it’s turns and twists, I find very interesting and beneficial to my knowledge of the subject.

  2. Thanks for posting this. I’m including it on tomorrow’s news briefs for The Daily Grail.
If I ever get to live as long as Mr. Moseley did, I hope I can be blessed with the level of his acute memory & wit.

  3. Seeing discussions concerning the Supreme Commander elsewhere, I did wonder how one might best sum up his body of work. There is nothing quite like definitive information straight from the source. And allowing people to see this material is a true contribution.
    Thanks for your efforts, Lance.

  4. James W Moseley, why did you have to die. Who is gonna keep up the fun and sanity in the not-so-scientific fringe…The Supreme Commander is dead, long live Saucer Smear…take care of him space brothers. Hey Jim, maybe Adamski is standing at the gates waiting to give you a big smack on the head.

  5. I listened to your interview on The Paracast show. Christopher O’Brien is such an arrogant & hypocritical cad.He doesnt have an ounce of credibility since he associates himself with disingenuous quacks like David Hatcher Childress & Brad Steiger. The whole field of ufology is an embarrassment

  6. Caught you on The Paracast the other night Lance – Unlike Mr.P.O I found you to be a voice of reason. Fantastic!

  7. From Christopher O’Brien to Lance Moody
“and I don’t give one flying f**k about any smarmy, uninformed, passive/aggressive, holier-than-thou opinion you may have about Ray and his work”
Lance,Maybe it is about time to take the glove off with that cocky, lying, deceitful & disingenuous quack Christopher O’Brien. This annoying character needs to face his own contradictions. He presents himself as “ethical”,yet he cherrypicks the facts he uses to present “cases” and ignores anything that doesn’t help his spin. I think he is one of those individuals who cannot stand to lose an argument. He loves to picture himself as the enforcer of ufology, denouncing & attacking the crappiest among the most disingenuous characters, but he doesn’t lay a finger on many crap masters who happen to be his personal friends.O’Brien is the personification of slimy
